WELCOME!!!
This forum is create to do various things. The most important is to demystify that massive discipline called "Class A Surfacing"
Why do this now? Many reasons but the most important of them all is simply to get as much knowledge out in this super competitive realm. I want to share my life's work with the world. Having been in studios around the world and having worked on many platforms (automotive, product, aerospace and even kids toys) I feel I have accrued a precious resource to share with all of my fellow designers from the beginner to the hardened veteran. Also, what better way to learn for myself than to challenge the world to answer questions from around the world.
One very important thing to keep in mind is we are all here to learn. All learning environments begin at the same place, a desire to better ourselves. At no point will there be any tolerance to insults, spamming or in general loathsome behavior. You never know who is at the other end. That might be the person you ask for a job from in the near future so please, lets all act like adults.
I will start filling in the knowledge on all listed topics. I expect people out there to know more than me on some subjects so please correct me or add anything of pertinence. This forum is free so the more knowledge on here the better for all. I know the exorbitant costs of schools these days is limiting the industry so lets expand it by passing around what we have learned.
As the page matures there will additional topics to be added. If there is something on here you wish to see added, as far as topics go please e-mail me.
Best regards!!!

Hi all:
I'm working with Steve to build up a catalog of useful video classes and tutorials called "Class-A", in hopes that they will be a useful tool in training class-a surfacing specialists. Steve and I are big believers in "the love and care of surface," and that a deep understanding of the way geometry works enables surfacing specialists to make better, cleaner, more flexible surfaces in their models.
We'll be delving into basic geometry and continuity types in detail, as well as exploring best practices in various types of modeling (freeform, history-based, strict parametric, and strict parametric + direct modeling). We are very excited about this project, and look forward to your ideas and feedback. Some of the basic tutorials are already available, and I'll be growing the portfolio of video tutorials weekly. Be sure to let us know how we can make these maximally useful for you and your teams.
Surfacing is one of the most direct intersections between engineering and beauty in the design process today. Technological power and precision are used in the creation of what is ultimately form of sculpting; a form of art. I hope that together we can improve and deepen our understandings of the art of surfacing as a community.
I'm looking forward to working with all of you. Get involved!
All the best, Adam

Hi Hypersurfacer:
I'll definitely be getting to primary surface tutorials soon. Is there a particular type of geometry you'd like to see me use in it such a tutorial?

Bezier geometry would be helpful as it is widely used in auto industry. Curious to see how the patch planning is done !!!

Itīs hard to build, every thing are involved eng design manufacturic suppliers and you have to take all tha info and build perfect surfaces. Look sheet metal panel finished is amazing! every path, every line, every radii, all detail are there. Letīs talk and share information about it!!! may the force be with you... Hello all. I've been doing class A studio since the early 90's and have used a lot of different software applications during that time. Its nice to see a forum dedicated to the art we create!

Hi, the info here is really helpful, but very few images load up and I don't think I've been able to open 1 powerpoint file at all. Is it me or is there some hosting issues?

I reached this site by Googling "class a surfacing academy" This site is intresting but I'm not sure it's exactly what I'm looking for. I am proficient in class A surfacing in UG. What I want; is to learn Catia. I was wondering if anyone, out there, can recommend a school or academy in SE Michigan that will teach, thoroughly, the dicipline of Catia augmented design. Please, I need your help. Thanks for your anticipated reply./ detroitdd@comcast.net

Thank you for your interest.
To be very frank, there is no one that teaches class A the way you want. You will find various schools that have courses but they are very lacking in quality people that know the material. Most people that do teach it have never designed a thing in there life.
If I were there in Detroit I would gladly train you but I am no longer teaching there. I have nearly 9 years on V5 doing parametric class a. As well as control point modeling. And a hybrid between the both. I have also been on UGNX for 14 years. And yes have actual studio experience in several locations.
If you have any questions I will gladly help you in anyway I can.
Best regards
class A
